Chasing Dreams: Immigrants in Sports and Entertainment is a new highlight series where we shine a light on the inspiring journeys of athletes, performers, and creatives who have moved to the United States in pursuit of their dreams.  Through their stories, we celebrate the resilience, determination, and passion that drive success in both sports and entertainment, reminding us of the vital role immigrants play in shaping industries and communities.

This week we begin with the journey of Erasmo Ramírez, a professional baseball player who moved from Rivas, Nicaragua, to the United States with the goal of pursuing his dreams. Erasmo’s story is one of perseverance, resilience, and determination as he made a name for himself in Major League Baseball (MLB).

The Journey of Erasmo Ramírez

Erasmo Ramírez was born in Rivas, Nicaragua, where he developed a deep love for baseball at a young age. However, in his hometown, opportunities to pursue a professional career in the sport were limited. Determined to make his dreams a reality, at the age of 16, Erasmo bravely left Nicaragua and moved to the United States for better opportunities in baseball.

In 2007, Erasmo signed with the Seattle Mariners as an international free agent, which allowed him to come to the U.S. to pursue his baseball career.  To legally compete as a professional athlete, he would have needed a P-1A visa, which is granted to internationally recognized athletes coming to the United States to perform in a professional capacity.  The Mariners provided him with the opportunity to develop his talent within their minor league system, which eventually led to his MLB debut in 2012.

Upon arriving in the U.S., Erasmo encountered the typical challenges faced by immigrants—language barriers, cultural adjustments, and the struggle to build a new life from scratch.  Despite these obstacles, Erasmo remained focused on his goal of reaching the MLB.  He worked relentlessly to improve his skills and attract the attention of professional scouts.

Erasmo’s Baseball Career

Erasmo Ramirez’s baseball journey began in the minor leagues after he signed with the Seattle Mariners in 2007. Assigned to several minor league teams, including the Peoria Mariners (Arizona Rookie League), Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A), and High Desert Mavericks (Class A-Advanced), Erasmo honed his skills and worked his way up through the system. His determination and talent eventually earned him a promotion to the Tacoma Rainiers (Triple-A) in 2011.

Erasmo made his MLB debut with the Seattle Mariners on May 30, 2012, against the Chicago White Sox. His early years were a mix of ups and downs, with Erasmo splitting time between the majors and minors, but his perseverance paid off. Over the years, he became a versatile pitcher, used both as a starter and reliever, known for his control and ability to get ground balls.

Erasmo also had stints with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox, solidifying his reputation as a reliable pitcher. Now, after several seasons with different teams, Erasmo Ramirez has returned to the Seattle Mariners for the 2025 season. His experience and skills make him a valuable addition to their pitching staff as he continues his professional baseball career.

Unexpected Love Story

Erasmo Ramirez met his future wife, RheaAnne, in April 2015 through former Rays pitcher Ernesto Frieri. While RheaAnne was busy handling her mascot duties, Frieri approached her and introduced her to Erasmo, saying, “Hey, this is my friend and he really likes you.”  Despite Erasmo's interest, RheaAnne, focused on advancing in her mascot career, was not interested in dating a baseball player, especially with the strict MLB rules against relationships between players and staff.

Undeterred, Erasmo texted himself from her phone and gave her his number.  Their conversations continued casually, but it was not until an event celebrating the Rays’ mascot Raymond’s anniversary that the two really connected.  When RheaAnne’s ride left without her, Erasmo drove her home, joking, "I think you owe me a date now."  Three days later, they went on their first official date.

Their relationship remained private for almost a year, until it was discovered by RheaAnne’s bosses in 2016.  After careful consideration, they went public with their relationship at the start of the 2017 season. That year, they welcomed their first child and married in December 2018.  Today, RheaAnne and Erasmo are happily married with  three children .

Why We Celebrate
Erasmo Ramírez

We celebrate not only Erasmo Ramírez’s achievements in baseball but also his resilience and perseverance.  His journey from Rivas, Nicaragua, to Major League Baseball is a powerful example of the immigrant experience, highlighting the importance of determination and the courage to overcome obstacles.

Erasmo's story is a testament to how immigrants contribute significantly to society, often overcoming tremendous barriers to achieve their dreams.  His dedication and hard work serve as an inspiration to anyone striving to reach their goals, regardless of the challenges they may face along the way.

As we reflect on Erasmo’s journey, we are reminded of the invaluable impact immigrants have on shaping diverse communities and industries.  Through their relentless effort and resilience, immigrants continue to enrich American society, showing that with perseverance, anything is possible.
