Chasing Dreams: Immigrants in Sports and Entertainment is a series dedicated to highlighting the remarkable stories of athletes, creatives, and performers who have come to the United States in pursuit of their dreams.  Through their journeys, we celebrate the resilience, passion, and determination that drive success across various industries.

This week, we spotlight Junior Alvarado, the Venezuelan jockey whose path from Maracaibo to Kentucky Derby champion is a powerful example of how grit and perseverance can lead to triumph at the highest level of sport.

The Journey of Junior Alvarado

Junior Alvarado was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, into a family with racing roots—his father, also a jockey, sparked his early interest in the sport. Determined to build a future in horse racing, Junior began riding competitively in Venezuela as a teenager. But like many aspiring athletes, he knew that true opportunity lay beyond his country’s borders.

In 2007, at just 21 years old, Junior made the life-changing decision to move to the United States in search of a better future in racing. The move was not just a professional risk—it meant leaving behind his family, culture, and everything familiar to start from scratch in a foreign country.

To ride professionally in the United States, Junior would have needed a P-1 visa or an O-1, which allows internationally recognized athletes to come to the U.S. to compete at the professional level.

Building a Career from the Ground Up

Junior’s early days in the U.S. were marked by hard work and persistence. He began racing at smaller tracks, proving himself with each mount and gaining the respect of trainers and owners alike. His skill in navigating high-pressure races, combined with his professionalism and work ethic, helped him rise through the ranks quickly.

Over the years, Junior became known as one of the most consistent and dependable jockeys in the sport. He developed a reputation for delivering smart, tactical rides and forming strong partnerships with horses and trainers alike. As of 2025, Junior had amassed more than 2,000 career wins and had participated in numerous high-profile races, including multiple Breeders’ Cup events.

A Defining Moment at the Kentucky Derby

In May 2025, Junior Alvarado reached a historic milestone: winning the Kentucky Derby, the most prestigious race in American horse racing. Aboard Mystik Dan, Junior delivered a brilliant performance that secured his place in the history books and marked the culmination of nearly two decades of relentless effort.

His win was celebrated not just as a personal victory but as a triumph for immigrants across the country—proof that dreams built through dedication and sacrifice can indeed come true.

Why We Celebrate Junior Alvarado

We celebrate Junior Alvarado not just for his remarkable success on the racetrack but for the strength and perseverance he has shown throughout his journey. From his early days in Maracaibo to his unforgettable ride at Churchill Downs, Junior’s story embodies the immigrant experience: one defined by hope, sacrifice, and unwavering determination.

His accomplishments are a reminder that immigrants play a vital role in enriching American sports and society. Through their talent and hard work, they push boundaries, break records, and inspire new generations to dream big.

As we honor Junior’s achievements, we also honor the millions of immigrants who come to the United States in pursuit of opportunity, proving every day that with courage and perseverance, anything is possible.
