Chasing Dreams: Immigrants in Sports and Entertainment is a series dedicated to highlighting the remarkable stories of athletes, creatives, and performers who have come to the United States in pursuit of their dreams. Through their journeys, we celebrate the resilience, passion, and determination that drive success across various industries.

This week, we focus on
Khaman Maluach, a rising star in basketball whose journey from a refugee camp in Uganda to Duke University shows how far talent and perseverance can take someone — even as they face unexpected challenges.
The Journey of Khaman Maluach

Khaman Maluach’s journey began in a refugee camp in Uganda, where his family sought safety after fleeing the violence in South Sudan.  With limited resources, Khaman’s early life was marked by hardship, but also by the resilience that would become a cornerstone of his story.  As a teenager, Khaman was introduced to basketball by a local coach, and his natural athleticism quickly stood out.  His size, strength, and work ethic set him apart, and he soon found himself training at the NBA Academy Africa, where he developed his skills at an elite level.

The F-1 Visa: A Path to Education and Athletics

After his time at the NBA Academy, Khaman received a scholarship to play basketball at Duke University, one of the most prestigious programs in the U.S.  To pursue his education and basketball career at Duke, Khaman entered the United States on an F-1 student visa.  This visa allowed him to study full-time while competing at the college level.

Making an Impact at Duke

Khaman’s talent was immediately evident when he joined the Duke Blue Devils.  In his freshman season, he averaged 8.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting a remarkable 71.4% from the field.  His ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor made him a standout player.
During the postseason, Khaman’s performance elevated even further.  Over the final seven games of the season, his averages jumped to 11.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure and solidifying his potential for future success.

Why Khaman’s Journey is Important

Khaman Maluach’s story is not just about basketball; it is a testament to the perseverance and strength of immigrants who continue to chase their dreams despite facing adversity.  From growing up in a refugee camp to earning a scholarship at one of the top universities in the U.S., Khaman has shown that with hard work, determination, and the right opportunities, anything is possible.

Looking Ahead: The Uncertainty of the Future

As Khaman continues to navigate his future, his path forward in the U.S. remains uncertain. While his potential as a basketball player is undeniable, his ability to stay and continue his education at Duke — and possibly pursue a professional basketball career in the NBA — is now directly tied to the political climate and immigration laws that are beyond his control.
The current political climate in the U.S. has led to concerns among immigrant communities, including those from South Sudan, about the stability of their immigration status. For Khaman, as well as other immigrant athletes, the present state of immigration law poses a risk to his future in the U.S. The potential for shifts in policy, such as travel bans, changes in the F-1 visa system, or other immigration pathways, could impact his ability to remain in the country and continue pursuing his dreams.
Khaman’s journey highlights the challenges immigrant athletes and students face as they balance their academic and athletic careers with the uncertainty of their legal status. For now, he not only faces the pressure of excelling on the court but also the very real possibility that his dreams could be jeopardized by immigration policies beyond his control.
