After attending San Jose State University, Koum began his career at Yahoo! as an infrastructure engineer. It was at Yahoo! where he met his future co-founder, Brian Acton, and the two formed a lasting friendship that would lay the foundation for one of the most revolutionary tech companies in the world.

In 2009, with a vision to simplify global communication and provide a more reliable and affordable alternative to texting, Jan Koum and Brian Acton co-founded WhatsApp.  The idea was simple yet powerful:  create an app that allows people to communicate with each other through messages, without the barriers of costly texting fees, and with privacy at the forefront.

In 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion, which at the time was one of the largest tech acquisitions in history.  Koum remained committed to preserving the core values of privacy and simplicity within WhatsApp, even after the acquisition.  His role as a leader and his vision helped maintain the app’s growth and popularity.
