Tuesday Immigration Update: Joseph B. Edlow Confirmed as Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

8/5/2025

On July 15, 2025, Joseph B. Edlow was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  He returns to the agency after serving in senior roles during the Trump administration, including Chief Counsel, Deputy Director for Policy, and Acting Director.

Background

Joseph B. Edlow’s previous roles include:
  • Chief Counsel, USCIS (2019)
  • Deputy Director for Policy, USCIS (2020)
  • Acting Director, USCIS (2020–2021)
  • Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Department of Justice
  • Counsel to the House Judiciary Committee
  • Counsel to Congressman Raúl Labrador
  • Assistant Chief Counsel, ICE Baltimore Field Office
  • Private practice attorney and policy fellow at conservative organizations

His prior tenure at USCIS coincided with the enforcement of several controversial immigration policies.

Concerns Regarding USCIS Leadership Under Edlow

Given Edlow’s past record, there are ongoing concerns about potential shifts in USCIS policies and practices, including:
  • A return to more restrictive interpretations of immigration laws and regulations that could limit access to certain benefits.
  • The possibility of longer processing delays and increased barriers for applicants.
  • Impacts on vulnerable populations, including families, asylum seekers, and low-income immigrants.
  • Questions about transparency and communication from USCIS regarding policy changes and procedural updates.

What You Should Consider

If you or your family have ongoing or upcoming immigration cases, it is important to:
  • Stay informed of any USCIS announcements or policy changes.
  • Keep all immigration documents organized and readily available.
  • Seek legal counsel if you encounter difficulties or have concerns about eligibility or processing.
