What to Know Wednesday: Dual Citizenship and Remote-Worker Visa Options for U.S. Citizens

8/13/2025

Interest in living abroad is growing among U.S. citizens, driven by a mix of professional opportunities, lifestyle changes, and— for some— a desire for stability in an uncertain political climate.  While relocating overseas requires planning and legal preparation, there are two main paths worth exploring:  dual citizenship and digital nomad visas.

Understanding Dual Citizenship
Dual citizenship allows a person to be a legal citizen of two countries at the same time.  This can provide greater freedom to travel, live, and work internationally. U.S. citizens can acquire a second citizenship through several avenues, the most common being:

  • Birthright citizenship: Being born in a country that grants automatic citizenship based on birthplace, or having parents or grandparents who were citizens of another country.
  • Naturalization: Applying for citizenship in another country after meeting residency and legal requirements.
  • Investment programs: Some countries offer citizenship or residency in exchange for significant financial investment.

Digital Nomad Visas
Digital nomad visas allow individuals to live in a foreign country while working remotely for a non-local employer or running their own business. While requirements vary by country, most programs include:
  • Proof of remote work or self-employment outside the host country
  • A minimum monthly income threshold (varies widely by location)
  • Valid health insurance covering the host country
  • A clean criminal background check

Examples of Available Options
Several countries currently offer long-term visa or residency pathways for remote workers and entrepreneurs, including:
  • Portugal – Offers both digital nomad and residency-by-investment programs.
  • Antigua & Barbuda – Long-term remote-worker visa with no local income tax on foreign earnings.
  • United Arab Emirates (Dubai) – One-year renewable remote work visa for qualified professionals.
  • Germany – A “freelancer visa” for self-employed professionals with client contracts.

Important Considerations Before You Apply
  • Taxes: You may still owe U.S. taxes while living abroad.
  • Residency vs. citizenship: Most visas provide residency only; citizenship is a separate process.
  • Healthcare: International health insurance is often required.
  • Renewal limits: Many visas have time caps or renewal requirements.

Final Note

For some, these options represent professional flexibility and adventure.  For others, they provide a safeguard in an unpredictable political environment.  Whatever your motivation, researching eligibility requirements and understanding the legal process before applying is essential to making a smooth and secure transition abroad.
